If you have questioned the recent popularity of pawnshops, then let this be an answer to your question… The stars of the reality show “Pawn Stars” are being featured on a limited edition prepaid debit card. That’s right, all your favorite “Pawn Stars” right on your card.

The Vegas reality show has become a huge hit for the History Channel and now the stars will have their faces immortalized on debit cards. With pawnshops providing financial services for consumers that don’t have a traditional checking account or credit card, they allow people direct access to funds they would not normally be able to have. This credit card achieves this goal perfectly.

This is just one more way that pawnshops are becoming mainstream. Though they have been around for centuries, pawnshops have become increasingly popular in the past few years as the economy went from bad to worse. Many consumers found themselves at the short end of the lending stick with banks and other traditional lending institutions unwilling to do business with them. They turned to an alternative source for their money needs; that being pawn shops.

Pawnshops do not have the red tape that traditional lending institutions have, therefore they are able to offer loans to consumers that banks cannot or will not. Also, pawnshops offer some fantastic deals on used electronics and other merchandise.

Whether you need a quick loan for personal needs, you are looking to make a few dollars on unwanted items around the house or you are in the market for a great bargain, pawnshops are there to help. Stop into your local pawnshop today to see what they can do for you!

This is the happiest time of the year, isn’t it? Well, not always. Not for everyone. This year, with the economic hardship that most are facing, it might not be the wonderful holiday season that everyone imagines. However, there are ways to make it a little easier.

If you are worried about buying presents this year for your loved ones, think outside the box. Or actually, think outside the store! That is right, instead of heading to the costly local retail mall, stop in and see what your local pawn shop has to offer!
You would be amazed at the wide selection of quality merchandise that is available on the shelves of a pawnshop. The hottest electronics like-new iPads, laptops, Nintendo gaming systems and much more can be found at prices lower than you can find elsewhere.

You can also find beautiful jewelry and watches, gold and diamonds and musical instruments. There is a little something for everyone. Plus, just by browsing, you might find that one little gem for a loved one that you never would have even thought of.

On the other side, if you are looking to get some cash to buy presents for your family this year, your local pawn shop can help you out there as well. Take in those items you no longer want and walk out with the money you need to take care of your holiday shopping.

Pawn shops will accept most items of value and give you cash on the spot for them. You can either straight out sell your merchandise or else use it for collateral for a loan. Check with your local shop to see their terms and interest rates for pawning items.

Though your budget may be a bit stretched and financially things may be a bit tighter than in previous years, that is no reason for you not to have a very happy holiday season. Try something new this year, shop at a pawnshop, save yourself some money and sleep easier knowing that you will make it a great holiday for those that you love!

Many people mistakenly think that if they decide to use the services of a pawn shop they are selling their personal belongings. This is inaccurate. Pawning is defined as: Something given as security for a loan; a pledge or guaranty. So what really is the difference between selling and pawning?

First, when someone decides to sell an item, they find a buyer and the two parties come to terms on a price. A transaction is made and ownership of the item is transferred to the purchasing individual. Pawning, on the other hand, works differently. When someone decides to pawn an item, they take their belonging and use it to obtain a loan. The item becomes collateral for that loan. The ultimate sale of that item only happens if the owner cannot repay the loan.

When looking at pawning and selling, there is another large difference. Usually, a pawn shop will pay more for an item than a straight out buyer will. This is because pawn shops have accompanying fees and interest. So, when you add in the money that the pawn shop will be making there, the difference is not highly significant. However, it is something to be considered.

Another difference in pawning and selling is the ease at which a transaction occurs. Though pawn shops have the right to choose whatever items they wish, they are usually easier to enter into a transaction with then simply attempting to sell an item on your own.

Lastly, pawn shop transactions are regulated by the government. This can be beneficial to an individual that is pawning their items because they know that there are laws that protect them. It is also good for the pawn shop for the exact same reason. When someone puts an item up for sale personally, they can find themselves in some sticky situations. Everything from faulty goods, to disputes in price can occur and it can become a case of he said, she said.

Ultimately, a person needs to decide what avenue is best for them when it comes to selling verses pawning. Some people feel that it is better to just outright sell their belongings and avoid any fees or interest associated with pawn shops. For others, who maybe are not ready to part with an item, a pawn shop is the way to go. In the end, it is up to you to decide!

If you have been paying attention to the local news as of late, or just looked out your car window at the multitude of “We Buy Gold” billboards, you know that something is going on with gold and silver. Over the past few years, the price of gold and silver has skyrocketed. The question is why?

The answer to this question comes in many different forms. It is a well known fact that investors have been buying precious metals as of late. They are doing this in the face of the ever declining value of the American dollar. The price for gold has actually doubled since we hit the recession. At this point, it is at an all time high. Silver has gone up as well. It has seen its highest price since the early 1980′s.

With government spending increasingly out of hand and unrest in the Middle East, investors are feeling more secure in putting their money into gold and silver that hold a higher value. Many feel that because of the continued printing of money while the country faces such enormous debt, it is inevitable that the US dollar will eventually collapse. However, gold and silver will still retain their worth.

There are those that feel that the bubble of the rising gold and silver prices will eventually burst. And though we have seen fluctuations in the prices, for the most part, they are still going up. It is thought that the price of gold will continue to rise because there is a relatively limited supply of the precious metal.

So, if you are not in the market for buying gold and silver, now might be a good time for you to go through all that old jewelry. You never know how much it might be worth!

In a recent post, we explored the stigma that the modern day pawn shop has to bear. In this article, we’d like to shed light on another area you may not have considered and that is how jewelry stores and pawn shops actually have a few things in common.

1. Both pawn shops and jewelry stores buy gold. Nowadays, you would be hard pressed to find a jewelry store that does not buy back gold. With the price of gold at an all time high, there are stores everywhere, even high end jewelry stores that are buying gold. While both pawn shops and jewelry stores will give you money for your gold, the amount is determined by the daily price of gold as well as the shop itself.

2. Both pawn shops and jewelry stores loan against jewelry. It is becoming more and more common to find jewelry stores that will loan money against jewelry. Sometimes, like pawn shops, they will hold the jewelry and if you do not come back to buy it, they will sell it. Other times, the owner will simply allow the jewelry store to sell the pieces straight out. This is very similar to the way pawn shops work with all of their items.

3. Both pawn shops and jewelry stores sell quality, high end jewelry. People believe that by purchasing their items at a jewelry store, they are getting the best quality. Though they will most likely be getting a great piece, they are also paying for it. Jewelry stores mark their merchandise 50% to 150% higher then you will find at a pawn shop. Often times, the selection of jewelry that you can find at pawn shops is equal to that you will find at any jewelry store. Most retail jewelry stores that sell diamonds buy them from wholesalers. These wholesalers buy the diamonds from various places that often include pawn shops.

It is time to change your thinking about pawn shops. There are many family friendly shops around these days that offer great deals. And before you turn to that high priced jewelry store for your next purchase, ask yourself is it really worth it to shop there just for the name of the store?

As you go about your daily driving, look around at your local stores. You may notice that you have a pawn shop in your neighborhood. If you have not been inside a pawn shop, you may wonder exactly what they are and how they work. So, we decided to ask the question, What exactly is a pawn shop?

According to Wikipedia, “a pawn broker is an individual or business (pawn shop) that offers secured loans to people, with items of personal property used as collateral“. In most pawn shops, a customer brings items in that they either no longer want or items that they would like to get money for at the present moment. The pawn broker will offer them money for the items, usually significantly less then the market value might dictate. The owner then has a set amount of time, usually 1-2 months, to come back and claim their things. There is usually an additional fee that is due prior to repurchasing the items.

Pawn shops are not a new concept. They date back as far as Ancient Greece. However, the rules have changed over time as to how pawn shops work. Pawn shops cannot sell an item before the specified date when a customer can redeem it. However, if someone really wants to purchase the item, the pawn shop may call the owner to try and procure a sale. Because the demand for that item is now higher, the owner may end up getting more money for the item.

5 Reasons Pawn Shops are Not What You Think

Have you ever stopped and gone inside or thought about visiting a pawn shop? If your answer was a quick no, ask yourself why you feel this way. In today’s society, there seems to be a stigma against pawn shops. Here are 5 common misconceptions regarding pawn shops.

Reason #1: Pawnshops are shady and in a bad part of town. Unfortunately, many people have this image of pawnshops. The truth is that this is a stereotype perpetuated more by Hollywood than anything else. Pawn brokers work very hard to make their establishments clean, friendly and inviting. They are not found only in “bad” areas riddled with crime. Take a look around the next time you are out running errands. You will be surprised that there are pawnshops in just about every kind of neighborhood.

Reason #2: Pawn brokers are only out to get your money. Pawnbrokers work hard, just like any other business owner. Sure they have their bottom line. However, they are providing a service. They are lending money to people in exchange for their goods. You must remember that the pawn broker is taking a chance giving you money for your items. They must wait before they can sell them and even then, there is no guarantee that the items will sell.

Reason #3: Pawn shops are full of stolen goods. Federal & State government regulates pawnshops. Every item brought into a pawn shop has its name, description and serial number entered into a service called LeadsOnline. This is a national database accessible to police departments resulting in very few stolen goods brought into pawn shops.

Reason #4: The merchandise in pawnshops is very low quality. Pawn brokers know that they need to ensure the quality of their goods. If they get a reputation that little to none of their items are of good quality, customers will not return to their establishment. Often times their items are like new & have never been used.

Reason #5: The clientele that frequent Pawn shops is questionable. From men to women, young to old, all races, and all income levels, the clientele is as diverse as any business. The reasons that people decide to use pawn shops vary widely. However, the truth is that people from all walks of life do business at pawn shops.
